SEBA's "I Am You" Campaign Receives Emmy Nomination

We are proud to announce that SEBA’s “I Am You” campaign has been nominated for a 2021 Emmy Award.

The 60-second campaign was launched in July 2020 to give a voice to our African American members during a time when society is examining important topics such as racial equality and policing in America.

The public service announcement was produced by SEBA Executive Director Lolita Harper and directed and edited by Media Relations Manager Chris Lee.

The SEBA Charity Committee has been created with the intent of attracting members who have a heart to advance SEBA charities. SEBA Charities is a 501 (c)3 non profit entity that conducts several charitable programs such as Shop With a Cop and Everyday Heroes.

The newly formed Charity Committee seeks members who are interested in serving. The committee is open to all SEBA members. Please contact SEBA Treasurer Tom Mabry at treasurer@seba.biz if interested.

SEBA Releases New Content Featuring Members in the Community

Caden Henderson’s selfless efforts to help children in local hospitals caught the attention of SEBA member Danny Garcia.

Caden had been hospitalized in 2016 and knows the challenges of being a kid confined to a hospital room while fighting to get healthy. He started “Caden’s Teddy Bears” to help comfort young patients by passing out stuffed animals in pediatric units. He has been diligent in his efforts for years.

But the coronavirus made dropping off teddy bears difficult and forced Caden to rework his charitable model. Caden started raising money for iPads to keep teens entertained and give them a way to connect with loved ones as visitations were severely limited.

Caden’s determination resonated with Danny, who is a corporal with the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department. Danny reached out to SEBA to find a special way to say thank you to Caden for his generosity. This is their story. This is SEBA Vlogs

Thank you Michael Fermin from the San Bernardino County District Attorney’s Office and Ultimate Pastime Sports Collectibles for all your help to make this happen.

Alameda Decision

ALAMEDA+BANNER+(SEBA).png

SEBA continues to advance its appeal with SBCERA in regard to return of contributions for members, as well as specific appeals for specified retiree groups. SBCERA will review and consider portions of SEBA’s appeal during its regular meeting on May 6, 2021.

Unfortunately, SBCERA has issued letters to retirees for collection of overpayment, which is disingenuous because all appeals are still pending. SEBA President Grant Ward, and RLS Attorney Jacob Kalinski, have been in constant communication with SBCERA officials and will continue to advance arguments for the SEBA membership.

For more information please visit the SEBA website at www.seba.com/alameda-decision.

SCHOLARSHIP BANNER.png

Each year the SEBA Scholarship Committee reviews several outstanding applications for financial awards. As usual, the competition was extremely tough, as SEBA received packets from several exceptionally qualified students.

The applications are reviewed “blindly,” without names or identifying information, by the SEBA Scholarship Committee. We are happy to congratulate the following winners:

$5,000 Richard Scovel Scholarship awarded to Brady Woods, son of Sheriff’s Sgt. Jonathan Woods.

$2,500 SEBA Scholarship awarded to Alyssa Warrick, daughter of Sheriff’s Lt. Robert Warrick.

$1,000 Reserve Scholarship awarded to Lauren Sullivan, daughter of retired Dep. Wayne Sullivan.
